Ellen Marie (Syrdal) Erdahl, 88, died June 6, 2023. Born in China to Lutheran missionary parents, Rolf and Borghild Syrdal, Ellen grew up in St. Anthony Park. She graduated from Murray High School, class of 1953. She was active at St. Anthony Park Lutheran Church, and was confirmed and married there.
At St. Olaf College (’57), she majored in music and sang in the St. Olaf Choir. Ellen taught in Blue Earth, where she met Arlen Erdahl. They started their family, farming near Frost, Minnesota.
Raising six children through many moves, Ellen directed church choirs and led hymn sings. A gifted singer and talented pianist, she taught piano and voice lessons from home, but mostly, she played piano for sheer enjoyment.
An excellent writer and editor, Ellen prepared campaign materials during Arlen’s years in politics, from positions in the Minnesota State Legislature to the U.S. Congress.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Arlen Erdahl; children Rolf (Carrie Vecchione), Eric, John, Lars (Molly), Laura (Scott) Weinberg, Kari (Eric) Hagen; 14 grandchildren; brother Fred (Jan) Syrdal; and sister-in-law Carol Erdahl.
Her funeral service has been held. Memorials encouraged to Luther Seminary, Lutheran World Relief or a charity of choice to serve others.
