Mary Margaret (Delaney) Johnson, 104, died July 3, 2023, after a long, well-lived and immensely proud Irish Catholic life.
An enthusiastic Minnesota sports fan and lifelong resident of St. Paul, Mary attended Central High School and married East Sider Chuck Johnson, who was being deployed to France during WWII.
During the war, Mary’s daughter Vicki was born, and soon after Chrissy joined the family that settled in Holy Childhood parish in the Como area.
Longtime members at Midland Hills Country Club, Chuck and Mary golfed, played cards and traveled with a large contingent of friends. But, even up until her last days, nowhere was she more at home than with her adoring family.
With her quick wit and sharp mind, Mary could have a clever or direct retort at any time during a conversation, keeping all listeners on their toes. She also was a great storyteller, sharing tales about her family including grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her father Richard, mother Margaret, four siblings, husband Chuck, and daughter Christine Droubie. She is survived by her daughter Vicki, son-in-law Gary (Nancy), six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mary’s life was held at Carondelet Village, her home the last 10 years of her life. Memorials to Sisters of St. Joseph Retirement Fund, 1884 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, MN 55105.
