In honor of her 100th birthday and community involvement, Falcon Heights Mayor Peter Lindstrom has declared Oct. 1 Gertrude Esteros Day in the city. Lindstrom presented Esteros with the declaration on Sept. 7 at a tribute to her at 1666 Coffman Condominiums on Larpenteur Avenue, the complex she took a lead roll in developing in the mid-1980s. Esteros led the University of Minnesota’s Design department for 30 years and founded the Goldstein Gallery (now the Goldstein Museum of Design). Now residing at Episcopal Homes, Esteros returned to 1666, where residents of the complex and family members treated her to a concert of Finnish Music by the Saana Ensemble (a nod to Esteros’ Finnish heritage), stories from friends, cookies (cardamom, her favorite) and cider.
